EARTH REFLECTIONS: PART 2

Hinewai Reserve, Aotearoa New Zealand

I hope that you have enjoyed creating your first postcard.

For the final part of the activity I would like you to take your second postcard to a safe place where you can see the night sky. I know that not everyone will feel safe outside at night time so please just do what you feel comfortable with. You could look for the Moon or stars from your window if you are not able to venture outside.

I invite you to gaze up into the stars and planets and think about our place within the solar system. Think about the vast distances between the planets in our solar system and the immense periods of time that they have orbited our star. Think about the rotation of Earth and the age of the ground beneath you and how its elements were formed. Think about the geologic time periods it has taken to create the oceans, mountains and forests across our planet and those life forms that we share these spaces with. How many sunrises and sunsets lit up the skies before there were eyes to see them?

Now I invite you to think again about the climate crisis, with this cosmic backdrop. How does looking out into this vast expanse, from our blue marble, change your perspective about the climate crisis? How cosmically important are Earth's environments and its inhabitants?

Write down or draw your feelings on your postcard.
