The Space in Between by Anna Gray at Lumen Gallery / Solo Show Award Recipient, Lumen Atina Residency 2017

"The unknown triggers me.
Scientific research answers questions and contributes to new knowledge. Even with this knowledge we often can’t understand why the complexity and beauty of nature is doing what it’s doing.  In this exhibition I’ve focused on the exploration of the unknown, the void, which is often understood as nothingness.

This involves everything from the expansion of the universe, to the void in between the veins of a leaf’s skeleton. Perceive the space around you in a different way by walking through an installation placed between the rounded walls of a crypt filled with enlarged glass cellular structures. Or zoom into the ‘empty’ space of a honeycomb cell.

Bio
Science and biology have always been a great inspiration in Anna’s work. Her art consist of sculptures and installations, often coexisting with glass. The material glass helps her to translate her never ending curiosity for scientific topics by using it’s qualities of distortion, magnification and transparency.

Anna graduated from the Glass Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam in 2015. In 2017 she received her MA at the Ceramics & Glass department of the Royal College of Art, London. She now lives and works in between London and Amsterdam.
