ART/ TECH/ NATURE/ CULTURE CURATORIAL AND CREATIVE RESIDENCY
Pale Blue Dot
Over this residency I have been reflecting on my experiences of natural darkness and how my understanding of the significance of this type of experience is strengthening as we march further into the depths of the climate crisis. I am deeply interested in the views of others on these subjects and with this in mind, I would like to share two projects with you.
This project was part of my solo exhibition for my North York Moors Dark Skies Residency. After experiencing my piece Ascending, the audience members took a postcard home with them and waited for a clear night, before heading out under the stars and anonymously sharing the feelings they experience when looking into the stars. The postcards were posted back to the gallery and displayed throughout the exhibition.
Cosmic Contemplation of a Planetary Catastrophe
This is a newly formed project which I hope will grow and grow. For several years I have been having conversations in person and over Zoom with astronomers and those working in astronomy about how they understand the climate crisis from a cosmic perspective, and how their own vast knowledge of time, distances and the rarity of life meets with their everyday experience of our changing world. For my ATNC residency I have asked a variety of these extraordinary people to put it down in words. I will be adding to this webpage as I receive more replies.
One of my respondents, Prof. Roberto Trotta has generously shared an excerpt for his forthcoming Gresham Lecture, The Future of Life on Earth, which will be at 1pm on May 9th at Barnard’s Inn Hall, London - in person and online. I am really looking forward to it! You can sign up for free tickets here.
Happy reading!
